National Stock Exchange or NSE as it is known as, works 5 days a week from Monday to Friday and are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Also, NSE observes stock market holidays 2022 on the following days-

Muhurat Trading shall be held on October 24,2022 (Diwali – Laxmi Pujan). Timings of Muhurat Trading shall be notified subsequently.  

The Exchange may alter / change any of the above holidays, for which a separate circular shall be issued in advance.

Stock Exchange trading schedule

Trading on equities takes place everyday throughout the year except on Saturdays and Sundays and holidays which are declared in advance by the Stock Exchange.

On an everyday basis, trading on equity takes place during a particular time for a fixed time. There is a fixed time for everything in the stock exchange which doesn’t extend for even a minute.

The pre-open timings to trade equities starts at exactly 9:00 a.m. and closes at 9:08 a.m. with random closing in the last one minute and immediately after the closing of pre-open order entry pre-open order matching takes place.

The regular trading timings to trade equities unless specified due to some special occasion is from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day from Monday to Friday.

The closing session of trading on equity is from 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The block deal takes place twice a day, in morning and in afternoon. The block deal is a single transaction in which a minimum of five lakh shares

Or a minimum value of 5 crore rupees takes place between the two parties where both the parties either agree to buy or sell at mutually agreed terms.

The block deal in the morning takes place between 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and in the afternoon it takes place between 2:05 p.m. to 2:20 p.m.

Note:  The Exchange may, however, close the market on days other than the above scheduled holidays or may open the market on days originally declared as holidays.

1. Is NSE closed today?

If it is a Saturday or Sunday or any of the above-mentioned holidays then yes, NSE is closed today or else NSE is open for trading. Apart from the holidays declared by the NSE in advance, Saturday and Sunday, NSE is operational every day.

2. Is the stock market on holiday today?

NSE or national stock exchange is functional 5-days a week from Monday to Friday throughout the year unless any muhurat trading is announced. Apart from this NSE observes holidays on some specific occasions only.

3. Is the stock market closed on Good Friday?

Yes, the stock market in India is closed on Good Friday as it is a gazetted holiday and just like schools, colleges, offices, banks and everything is closed on this day, so is the Indian stock market.

4. What time does the NSE open today?

NSE opens every day at sharp 9:00 a.m. for pre-open order and stays open for pre-open order till 9:08 a.m. and for regular trading NSE opens at 9:15 a.m.

The time of opening and closing of the stock market remains the same every day unless there is any muhurat trading which is announced well in advance.

5. Is NSE closed on Eid?

Yes, NSE observes the holiday on Eid. Be it Eid-ul-fitr or Eid-ul-adha, NSE is not functional on both the days. Not only on Eid but NSE is also closed on festivals like Muharram, Diwali, Good Friday, Diwali, Christmas, Ambedkar Jayanti, Maha Shivaratri etc.

6. How many trading days in 2022?

Since 2022 is not a leap year so there are 365 days in this year out of which, NSE will be closed on 16 weekdays as the rest of the holidays are falling on weekends which are 8 in number.

Also, on Saturdays and Sundays too the NSE is closed. So, in total there are exactly 251 trading days in 2022.
