Mobile Number Portability is a facility made available to mobile users, allowing them to switch from one mobile operator to another irrespective of their geographical location (i.e., Chennai to Delhi).

It means that mobile phone customers can keep their telephone numbers and prefixes the same as they switch from one service provider to another.

Customers often get their mobile operator changed because they are unhappy with their current plans or network availability. This facility is for dissatisfied customers who wish to opt for a new mobile operator.

For example, people change from Airtel to Jio or Vodafone to Jio and vice-a-versa. The customer's existing mobile number can be retained in this process, and it is conducted free of cost.

Customers wanting to their mobile portability from one connection to another need to satisfy the following criteria:

(i) Both prepaid and postpaid users can port their phone from one service provider to another. However, they need to have spent a minimum of 90 days with their old telecom service.

There is also an option to switch back to the previous operator by using the new service provider’s connection for a minimum of 3 months.

(ii) All outstanding dues with the existing mobile operator need to be cleared before switching to a different telecom service provider

(iii) The mobile number should not be prohibited or banned by the court of law.

(iv) There should not be an existing change of ownership request already in place.

(v) The user should not be bound by any contractual obligations from its existing service operator according to the exit clause provided by the mobile company.

Only after one satisfies the criteria mentioned above can it be possible to generate a Unique Porting Request (UPC). After that, it takes about seven days to port the number. If one does not satisfy the criteria, they are notified via SMS stating the reason for rejection.

Step-by-Step Process on How to Port Mobile Number Operator

An essential step is to finalize the new operator with which the user would like to get into an agreement with. Once the decision is made, the following steps are to be undertaken:

Step 1: Send an SMS on 1900 in the following format: ‘PORT’ followed by space <Mobile number you wish to port>. This will generate the UPC that will be received on the mobile through an SMS.

Step 2: Fill out the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and Porting Form of the operator of your choice, making sure to include the UPC. Collect a new SIM from the operator at a customer service center/point of sale after submitting the required payment and KYC documents.

You will receive a message from the MNP service provider verifying the filing of your porting request and advising you of the 24-hour withdrawal window.

Step 3: The existing mobile number operator will respond with an eight-digit Unique Porting Code (UPC) on your mobile number registered with them.

The UPC is valid for four days. It is valid for 30 days in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North East. As a result, it's good to provide the UPC to the new operator as soon as possible.

Step 4: Once you visit the service operator, changing mobile portability will require submitting a few documents and the eight-digit UPC number.

This operator will notify the old operator and conduct a background check. Once that is cleared, the request status will be received in a week.

Step 5: It takes three working days to port within a Licensed Service Area (LSA) (for example, within the Gujarat LSA). It takes five working days to port from one LSA to another.

In addition, the porting of a corporate number takes five working days. In the licensed service areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North East, the porting number time will be up to 15 working days.

Step 6: Insert the new SIM, and once the verification is done, the new network will be active on the phone.
