CBSE (Central Board of School Education) is a national education board of India for private as well as government schools. With its headquarters based in Delhi, CBSE was founded in 1929. 

About 27,000 schools within the country as well as 250 in foreign states are associated with the board presently. All educational institutions under the CBSE administration  follow the NCERT curriculum.

All schools in the country follow the same CBSE Holiday List 2022 throughout the year. The holidays include gazetted and no gazetted holidays and national holidays as well.

Apart from that some other holidays may be added to the list in terms of the state but the major school holidays for all schools are the same.

List of holidays

1. New Year’s Day (January 1)

This day marks the beginning of the year and is celebrated with merry making and wishing each other.  

2. Boghi (January 13)

This day is celebrated to honour the rain God, seeking their blessing to offer a good rainy season for the year. 

3. Makara Sankranti (January 14)

This festival is celebrated to honour and is dedicated to the sun deity, Surya.  

4. Republic Day (January 26)

This day is celebrated to commemorate the day the Indian constitution came into effect.

5. Vasant Panchami (February 5)

This day is celebrated to honour Goddess Saraswati and seek for wisdom and art. 

6. Maha Shivaratri (March 1)

This is a Hindu festival celebrated to honour Lord Shiva.

7. Holi (March 19) 

This is a festival of colors and is celebrated to celebrate love, peace and spring.

8. Ram Navami (April 10)

This is a Hindu festival and is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Lord Rama

9. Mahavir Jayanti (April 14)

This day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Mahavira and also to honour him on his day. 

10. Dr Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14)

Ambedkar Jayanti is observed and celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar. 

11. Good Friday (April 15)

The Christians celebrate this day by remembering Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for them.

12. Eid Ul Fitr (May 3) 

This is a Muslim festival and is celebrated to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan

13. Buddha Purnima (May 16)

This day is observed and celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha.

14. Bakrid/ Eid al Adha (July 11)

This is a Muslim festival and is celebrated to mark the sacrifice of Ibrahim of his son Ismail as ordered by Allah

15. Muharram (August 9)

This day marks the first month of the Muslim’s Islamic Calendar. 

16. Raksha Bandhan (August 12)

This is a Hindu festival and is celebrated to mark the relationship of a brother and sister.

17. Janmashtami (August 19)

This is a Hindu festival and is celebrated to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna.

18. Vijaya Dashami (October 5)

This is a Hindu festival and is celebrated to mark the end of Durga puja.

19. Eid e Milad (October 9)

This day is celebrated to mark the birthday of the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad. 

20. Diwali (October 25)

This is a Hindu festival and is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. It is a festival of lights and people celebrate it by merry making and crackers.

21. Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 8)

This day is celebrated to mark and commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. 

22. Christmas Day (December 25)

This day is celebrated by Christians to mark the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ.
