Best Comedy Movies in India

bollywood comedy movies

Searching for best comedy movies of Bollywood then you have came to the right article.

Comedy is a communal embrace that Bollywood has produced at its finest and worst moments.

When Hindi cinema is at its most inspired, it can be a lot of fun—for both the audience and the directors and crew behind the camera. When one thinks of films like Half Ticket, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, or Andaz Apna Apna, one wonders

If the actors and crew had as much pleasure creating them as we had watching them. However, in many situations, we know that it was not all fun and games on the sets.

Anyone will attest to Kishore Kumar's vaudevillian talent. That is undeniably true. Whatever the setting of a comedy film, its material is certain to make you laugh. A naïve love tale (comedy) would be just as amusing as a scathing satire.

Some of the finest Bollywood comedy movies cater to all sorts of audiences by balancing intellect with humour. With that being said, let us take a look at the 20 best comedies made in India!

Here is the list of Top 20 best comedy movies of Bollywood

1. Munnabhai MBBS (2003)

Sanjay Dutt's endearing gangster persona had a role in Raju Hirani's debut film, which also served as his breakout.

Whereas Vaastav's Dutt in Munnabhai was a more professional gangster, Hirani goes for the reverse effect, playing it for laughs.

Hirani also turns Vaastav's Mother India syndrome into daddy problems in Munnabhai and continues on this path in successive films, most recently in Sanju.

With Sanjay Dutt in comedy mode, you've already won half the battle as a director.

Dutt plays Munnabhai, a good-hearted goon who enrols in medical school to become a doctor and is helped through the good and bad times by the sidekick Circuit.

"206 type ka sirf haddi hai insaan ki body." "What time is it today?" Munnabhai imparts his newly acquired knowledge to Circuit, who subsequently delivers an

"imported body" to his boss for medical dissection. The Dutt-Warsi bromance, along with Hirani's jaadu ki jhappi formula, results in a new and-

Entertaining comedy that plays on its star actor's tapoori image and blends clean humour with Hirani's brand of filmmaking.

Hirani resurrects Gandhi's spirit in its highly creative sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai a few years later to give us a new buzz phrase. Gandhigiri this time.

2. Dulhe Raja (1998)

Govinda has a gift for humour that appeals to the masses rather than the upper crust. But who knows?

In Dulhe Raja, he portrays the titular character, a smooth-talking roadside Dhaba proprietor,

in the most David Dhawanesque comedy that David Dhawan did not produce.

The narrative sympathises with him in the same way that it does with Rajinikanth, Mithun Chakraborty, and

Other performers with undeniable audience appeal. The glib ruffian who falls for the rich man's daughter is a classic Govinda character.

The affluent man (Kadar Khan) lives in a football stadium-sized estate with gigantic stairs and round sofas. When Govinda is in peak form, he might appear to have been born to play that character.

Harmesh Malhotra, the director, gathers the other Govinda stalwarts for support. They include Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever, and Asrani, who all contribute to making this laugh-out-loud comedy immensely pleasant – even unforgettable.

Aside from large doses of hilarity, one among the great attractions of a Govinda film is the music.

3. Hera Pheri (2000)

A Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam film from 1989. Ramji Rao's Hera Pheri is a cult masterpiece, to be sure.

The plot centres around a troubled trio who become entangled in a hazardous kidnapping case.

Priyadarshan injects enough turmoil and commotion into this multi-starrer to keep the audience on their toes.

Writers Neeraj Vora and Siddique-Lal increase the density of comedy potential by adding new characters regularly, with no end in sight.

It is commonly assumed that Priyadarshan directed Hera Pheri during the height of his career as a humorous filmmaker.

In reality, it was one of his first Hindi comedies, and it established the tone for this Malayalam filmmaker's Bollywood career. The film, which stars a side-splitting Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar, and Om Puri, is more than just a feel-good story. It feels better!

  • Cast: Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Sunil Shetty, Tabu, Om Puri, Gulshan Grover, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mukesh Khanna
  • IMDb: 8.1

4. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

Two loafers (Aamir Khan and Salman Khan) battle for an heiress's heart and end up protecting her from criminals.

While the picture received mixed reviews when it first came out, it is now considered a cult masterpiece.

This film's dialogue has been repeated, re-quoted, and incorporated into current discussion and society.

That is the brilliance of this oddball comedy. In terms of a chronological plot, summarising this Rajkumar Santoshi scam is like recounting-

How Aamir Khan scored that goal for Mohan Bagan with sherbet glasses. One of the drinks has been tainted, and he's only recently regained his memories.

To add to the uncertainty, either the aim was very strategic or, more likely, he made it up. To Salman Khan's bumbling Prem, Aamir portrays the ne'er-do-well Amar. Paresh Rawal, nicknamed Teja, obviously criticises them as "filmy and slackers."

Details

  • Cast: Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal
  • IMDb: 8

5. Raja Babu (1994)

Govinda has a gift for humour that appeals to the masses rather than the upper crust.

But who knows? When Govinda is in peak form, he might appear to have been born to play that character.

Harmesh Malhotra, the director, gathers the other Govinda stalwarts for support.

They include Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever, and Asrani, who all contribute to making this laugh-out-loud comedy immensely pleasant – even unforgettable.

Aside from large doses of hilarity, one among the great attractions of a Govinda film is the music.

The famous Akhiyon se goli maare show the star's free-style dance skills, while the qawwali Suno sasurji, while similarly cringe-worthy, is watchable for the same reasons.

Details

  • Cast: Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani

  • IMDb: 6.3

6. Golmaal (2006)

Gopal, Lucky, Madhav, and Laxman are four friends united by their childish notoriety, aimlessness, and-

The small business of duping people for fun and money. Laxman is a bright student who is bullied by his nefarious buddies Gopal, Madhav, and-

The silent Lucky. This is due to the fact that all four of his buddies perform their activities in his hostel room.

He is persuaded by his peers to commit a series of scams in order to get money for himself and his buddies.

After being kicked out of college, the mischievous quartet takes sanctuary in the bungalow of a blind couple as their grandson.

As Laxman's body and Gopal's voice approach Sameer, a cat-and-mouse game ensues. When the blindfolded Dadaji enters the room, amusing occurrences ensue.

7. Half Ticket (1962)

Kishore Kumar meets Tun Tun's mischievous child (called Bhopu) at a railway station and-

Entices him with a variety of Indian sweets ("Rasgulla khaoge, gulab jamun khaoge, imarti khaaoge, peda khaoge!").

Kishore, who portrays Seth Lalchand's son, steals Bhopu's clothing and hobbles off to Bombay as the man-child Munna.

He's on a half-ticket journey, avoiding his mill-owning family's wealthy fortunes.

Enter Pran (diamond thief Raja Babu, Munna's comedic foil), who spends the rest of the film attached to Munna through an umbilical cord.

Details

  • Cast: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Pran, Helen

  • IMDb: 7.3

8. Chupke Chupke (1975)

Hrishikesh Mukherjee removed Rajesh Khanna from his dazzling gloss in 1972's Bawarchi and cast him as a chef.

But this is no average chef. He is a thinker. Three years later, Hrishida cast Dharmendra and

Amitabh Bachchan in Chupke Chupke, a classic comedy about misplaced and freshly assumed identities, practical pranks, and intricate charades and disguises.

Dharmendra portrays a renowned professor disguised as a driver in order to reduce Sulekha's hero-worshipping veneration for her brother-in-law.

The driver speaks impeccable chaste Hindi, just like Bawarchi's chef does.

Amitabh Bachchan gets to show off his comedic chops as the shy and timid English lit professor Sukumar, while Sharmila Tagore plays a girl from a well-to-do upper-class family.

This is one of the popular among other best hindi comedy movies.

Details

  • Cast: Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore
  • IMDb: 8.3

9. Chashme Baddoor (2013)

Two roommates fall in love with the same girl, but only one wins her heart.

Everything that happens between the other two trying to split them up and a joyful ending is met with laughs.

Chashme Buddoor was the quintessential collegiate comedy from the early 1980s.

Seema turns down six marriage proposals from her father and departs for Goa.

Jai and Omi scheme to separate the two after failing to impress her and discovering that their friend Sid is dating her.

  • Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Siddharth, Ali Zafar, Divyenddu, Rishi Kapoor, Anupam Kher

10. 3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots, based on Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone, was the most grossing film of its time and a hit in China as well.

Two pals are searching for the third 'idiot,' who was the other one and has been missing since the last day of college.

To put it mildly, it's a roller-coaster ride. Keep an eye out for the bizarre monologue in which Omi Vaidya delivers a speech in Hindi.

Farhan and Raju build a strong relationship with Rancho in college because of his refreshing viewpoint.

Years later, a bet allows them to search for their long-lost buddy, whose existence appears to be elusive.

Details

  • Cast: Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Omi Vaidya
  • IMDb: 8.4

11. Chachi 420 (1997)

A tangled tale in which a father-in-law falls in love with his son-in-law dressed as a lady.

This is a wild ride. Although it was clearly influenced by Robin Williams' Mrs Doubfire, Kamal Hassan gave his all to this endearing comedy.

To spend more time with his kid, a divorcee disguises himself as an elderly lady and takes a job as her caretaker.

Details

  • Cast: Kamal Hassan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Tabu, Om Puri, Johnny Walker, Amrish Puri
  • IMDb: 7.4

12. Delhi Belly (2011)

A witty and action-packed drama about two struggling housemates and a merciless criminal.

A donkey humping an autorickshaw was as amusing as Delhi Belly. Tashi, Nitin, and Arup,

Three struggling roommates, unintentionally become the target of a prominent mobster after misplacing his valuable gems.

Another super-duper film from Aamir Khan, a thought-provoking and fantastic producer and perfectionist in his own right.

Imran Khan has done an excellent job and kudos to all of the cast members.

Details

  • Cast: Imran Khan, Vir Das, Aamir Khan, Kunal Roy Kapoor
  • IMDb: 7.5

13. Vicky Donor (2012)

A fertility specialist is looking for a healthy sperm donor. He meets Vicky and gets him to become a member.

Everything is fine until Vicky marries and his secret is discovered. In addition, his wife is infertile.

Consider this one of the greatest comedy/coming-of-age films released in recent years.

Dr Baldev, the proprietor of a fertility clinic and sperm bank, is looking for a healthy sperm donor.

When he meets Vicky, a lovely young Punjabi kid, his search comes to an end. Blood donation is an old topic these days. Why not use sperm? Fertilization has already been shown in films like I AM, The Tree Of Life, and others.

However, Vicky Donor adds a comic element to the film concerning fertilization. That is a unique and unusual attempt introduced in a Bollywood film.

Vicky Donor is a feature film with a new concept and new stars.

14. Dhamaal (2007)

Dhamaal is an incredible and hilarious story of four average university dropouts and

unemployed guys who started their own organisation of con artists, stealing and engaging in other illicit actions to get money.

It's incredibly insane and hilarious. Although some parts of the film, including the plot, are based on Rat Race,

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and Mr Bean, Director Indra Kumar weaves in new characters,

Unexpected plots, and twists and turns, making it truly come ducal and putting a smile on the faces of the audience.

  • Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey, Ashish Chaudhary

20. Welcome (2007)

The film actually expands on its one-line plot. This is due to the characters and the performers' performances.

Nana Patekar has not contributed as much to comic films as he could have. His reactions and engagement as Uday Shetty, in his own unique manner, are a treat to see.

He performs something similar to what I believe Paresh Rawal performed in the all-time

Classic Hera Pheri (Though, he was not as hilarious as Babu Bhaiyya). But I adored his character.  Anil Kapoor, who provides his greatest performance in a comedy film, is also excellent.

Majnoo Bhai is kind, innocent, and dangerous. He is so animated that you can't help but giggle anytime he appears on film.

  • Cast: Nana Patekar, Akshay Kumar, Mallika Sherawat, Feroz Khari
  • IMDb: 6.9

Conclusion

In India, comedy films are classified as "family films." There are no points for guessing that they do really well at the box office.

So much so that love and comedy films were equally popular. While most comedy films nowadays are 'escapist,' some classic treasures from back in the day had flawless plot lines.

These outrageously funny films demonstrate how great comedies combine wit and intelligence, chaos and innovation, and equal parts idiocy and sophistication.

The above list consists of the best comedies that Bollywood has to offer, and you wouldn’t go wrong by picking any of the flicks.
