According to the legend associated with Hariyali Teej, Lord Shiva reminds Goddess Parvati about the number of times she took rebirths to win his heart. Mata Parvati had forgotten all that happened in the 107 previous births.

 Therefore Lord Shiva narrated the stories of her struggles, determination and perseverance to her. Mata Parvati took her 108th birth at the house of the King of Himalayas.

During this birth, Mata Parvati performed intense penance to win Lord Shiva's heart. She survived on dry leaves after giving up food and water.

She braved harsh weather, hail and storm and continued with her penance. After seeing her undergo so much pain, her father was distraught.

A few days later, Devarshi Narada Muni visited her father's palace as Lord Vishnu's representative with a marriage proposal. After learning that Lord Vishnu has expressed his desire to marry his daughter, the father beamed with joy, but this news left Parvati devastated.

 Therefore, she sought one of her friend's help and hid in a thick forest. The king of Himalayas sent his soldiers to nook and corner, but all their efforts went in vain.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva appeared before Parvati and granted her the boon of having him as her husband. He also asked her to inform her father about her decision not to marry Lord Vishnu.

Eventually, after learning about his daughter's desire, the father invited Lord Shiva and got Parvati married to him.

Hartalika Teej Katha Vidhi

The auspicious timings of Hartalika Teej Puja are in the morning which means the women get up early to take a holy bath, intended to purify their souls.

Dressing up in new clothes and adorning is an important part of the festival as women wear elegant traditional attires, mostly sarees.

In Maharashtra, women wear green clothes, green bangles, golden bindis and kajal along with applying henna (mehandi) on their hands. They visit temples to pray Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who is also called Teej Mata while observing Nirjala fast.

Upon returning from temples, they touch their husbands’ feet. In the evening, the women retake a bath before the sunset and dress up as a newly-wed bride.

They make idols of Shiva and Parvati out of clay or sand for performing Hartalika Teej Puja. Bilwa leaves, flowers, incense sticks and lighting diya are offered to Gods.

They hear Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha in Hindi which narrates the famous Hindu legend of Lord Shiva reminding Parvati being incarnated as Goddess Shailaputri, the daughter of Himalaya.

Hartalika Teej Vrat is completed with the break of fast and worshipping rituals the next day morning.

हरतालिका तीज व्रत में भगवान शिव, माता पार्वती और गणेश भगवान की पूजा की जाती है। विवाहित स्त्रियां इस व्रत को पति की लंबी उम्र और खुशहाल जीवन की कामना से रखती हैं तो वहीं अविवाहित लड़कियां अच्छे वर की प्राप्ति के लिए।

हरतालिका तीज व्रत पूजन में कथा सुनना बेहद जरूरी माना जाता है। मान्यता है हरतालिका व्रत कथा स्वयं भगवान शिव ने ही मां पार्वती को सुनाई थी। जानिए क्या है ये कथा।

शिव जी कहते हैं- ‘हे गौरा, पिछले जन्म में तुमने मुझे पाने के लिए क‍ठोर तप और घोर तपस्या की थी। तुमने इस तपस्या के दौरान ना तो कुछ खाया और ना ही पीया बस हवा और सूखे पत्ते चबाकर रहीं। भयंकर गर्मी और कंपा देने वाली ठंड भी तुम्हें तुम्हारी तपस्या से हटा न सकी।

बारिश में भी तुमने जल नहीं पिया। तुम्हारी इस हालत को देख तुम्हारे पिता दु:खी थे। उनको दु:खी देख नारदमुनि आए और कहा कि मैं भगवान विष्णु के भेजने पर यहां आया हूं। वह आपकी कन्या की से विवाह करना चाहते हैं।

’नारदजी की बात सुनकर आपके पिता बोले अगर भगवान विष्णु यह चाहते हैं तो उन्हें कोई आपत्ति नहीं। परंतु जब तुम्हें इस विवाह के बारे में पता चला तो तुम अत्यंत ही दुःखी हो गईं।

तुम्हारी सहेली ने तुम्हारे दुःख का कारण पूछा तो तुमने उसे बताया कि मैंने सच्चे मन से भगवान शिव का वरण किया है, किन्तु मेरे पिता ने विष्णुजी के साथ मेरा विवाह तय कर दिया है। अब मेरे पास प्राण त्याग देने के अलावा कोई और उपाय नहीं बचा है।

तुम्हारी सखी ने कहा-प्राण छोड़ने का यहां कारण ही क्या है? मैं तुम्हें घनघोर वन में ले चलती हूं जो साधना स्थल भी है और जहां तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हें खोज भी नहीं पाएंगे। तुमने अपनी सखी की बात मानकर ऐसा ही किया। तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हें घर में न पाकर बड़े चिंतित और दुःखी हुए।

इधर तुम्हारी खोज होती रही उधर तुम अपनी सहेली के साथ गुफा में मेरी आराधना में लीन रहने लगीं। तुमने एक दिन रेत के शिवलिंग का निर्माण किया। तुम्हारी कठोर तपस्या के प्रभाव से मेरा आसन हिल उठा और मैं शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे पास पहुंचा और तुमसे वर मांगने को कहा।

वर मांगते हुए तुमने कहा, ‘मैं आपका सच्चे मन से पति के रूप में वरण कर चुकी हूं। यदि आप सचमुच मेरी तपस्या से प्रसन्न हैं तो मुझे अपनी अर्धांगिनी के रूप में स्वीकार कर लीजिए। तब ‘तथास्तु’ कहकर मैं कैलाश पर्वत पर लौट गया। उसी समय गिरिराज अपने बंधु-बांधवों के साथ तुम्हें खोजते हुए वहां पहुंचे।

तुमने कहा कि मैं घर तभी जाउंगी अगर आप महादेव से मेरा विवाह करेंगे। तुम्हारे पिता मान गए और उन्होने हमारा विवाह करवा दिया। मान्यता है जिस दिन भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती को पत्नी रूप में स्वीकार किया था उस दिन भाद्रपद शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि थी।

हरतालिका तीज कथा विधि

• हरतालिका पूजन प्रदोष काल में किया जाता हैं. प्रदोष काल अर्थात दिन रात के मिलने का समय.
  
  
• हरतालिका पूजन के लिए शिव, पार्वती एवं गणेश जी की प्रतिमा बालू रेत अथवा काली मिट्टी से हाथों से बनाई जाती हैं.
  
  
• फुलेरा बनाकर उसे सजाया जाता हैं. उसके भीतर रंगोली डालकर उस पर पटा अथवा चौकी रखी जाती हैं.
  
  
• चौकी पर एक सातिया बनाकर उस पर थाल रखते हैं. उस थाल में केले के पत्ते को रखते हैं.
  
  
• तीनो प्रतिमा को केले के पत्ते पर आसीत किया जाता हैं. सर्वप्रथम कलश बनाया जाता हैं जिसमे एक लौटा अथवा घड़ा लेते हैं. उसके उपर श्रीफल रखते हैं. अथवा एक दीपक जलाकर रखते हैं. घड़े के मुंह पर लाल नाडा बाँधते हैं. घड़े पर सातिया बनाकर उर पर अक्षत चढ़ाया जाता हैं.
  
  
• कलश का पूजन किया जाता हैं. सबसे पहले जल चढ़ाते हैं, नाडा बाँधते हैं. कुमकुम, हल्दी चावल चढ़ाते हैं फिर पुष्प चढ़ाते हैं. उसके बाद शिव जी की पूजा जी जाती हैं. इसकी विधी विस्तार से पढ़े. श्रावण सोमवार महत्व एवम कथा  के बारे में जानने के लिए पढ़े.
  
  
• कलश के बाद गणेश जी की पूजा की जाती हैं. उसके बाद माता गौरी की पूजा की जाती हैं. उन्हें सम्पूर्ण श्रृंगार चढ़ाया जाता हैं.
  
  
• इसके बाद हरतालिका की कथा पढ़ी जाती हैं. फिर सभी मिलकर आरती की जाती हैं जिसमे सर्प्रथम गणेश जी कि आरती फिर शिव जी की आरती फिर माता गौरी की आरती की जाती हैं.
  
  
• पूजा के बाद भगवान की परिक्रमा की जाती हैं. रात भर जागकर पांच पूजा एवं आरती की जाती हैं.
  
  
• सुबह आखरी पूजा के बाद माता गौरा को जो सिंदूर चढ़ाया जाता हैं. उस सिंदूर से सुहागन स्त्री सुहाग लेती हैं.
  
  
• ककड़ी एवं हलवे का भोग लगाया जाता हैं. उसी ककड़ी को खाकर उपवास तोडा जाता हैं.
  
  
• अंत में सभी सामग्री को एकत्र कर पवित्र नदी एवं कुण्ड में विसर्जित किया जाता हैं .
