Jivitputrika vrat or Jitiya vrat is celebrated with great pomp in Hinduism.

According to the Panchang, Jitiya Vrat 2022 is coming on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month in every year.

This vrat is done for the long life of the children and for their happiness and prosperity. This time Jitiya puja date is on 18th September, Sunday but the Ashtami will be start from 17th September and will end on 18th September, 2022.

It is also called Jitiya Vrat. The puja vidhi for Jitiya vrat (जितिया व्रत) on the day of Ashtami is special and it is kept waterless.

In this vrat, worship is done on the second day i.e. Krishna Paksha Ashtami, the fast is not considered complete until its story of vrat is read or heard.

That is why today we are telling you the mythological fasting katha of Jitiya Vrat in Hindi. The evidence of this vrat is associated with the story of Mahabharata.

By the way, this festival is doing for the three days. Women celebrate the festival of Jivitputrika vrat (जीवित्पुत्रिका व्रत) with great devotion.

After bathing and eating on Saptami Tithi, on Ashtami Tithi, woman keep a Nirjala vrat for the prosperity of children i.e. Parana is done.

On the day of taking bath, fasting people are avoiding to eat food or anything after sunset and even they do not make items with use of onion-garlic in the house.

After this, on the Navami tithi, Lord Surya dev is offered Arghya and his mantras are chanted.

Jitiya vrat is considered to be one of the most difficult and hard fasts. Let's discuss about the Jitiya Vrat Puja Date in 2022, Vrat Vidhi, Paran Time and Importance.

Jitiya Vrat Katha Puja Vidhi

First Day: Nahay Khay 

Jivitputrika Vrat starts from this day of Nahay Khay. One should not eat anything after sunset, that is, before the fast of Jitiya.

On this day women take one meal after taking bath and then do not eat anything in whole day.

Second Day: Khur Jitiya

This day is called Khur Jitiya (खुर जितिया). On this day women doing a Nirjala vrat. It is a special and main day which falls on Ashtami. Even at night water is not drunk.

Third Day: Paran.

This Jivitputrika vrat is on the last day and food is taken after Parana. Especially on this day Jhor Bhaat (झोर भात), Noni ka Saag (नोनी का साग) and Madua Roti (मडुआ की रोटी) are taken in the food.

  • Wake up early in the morning and take bath and wear clean clothes.

  • Offer prasad and colorful threads in the fast.

  • Wearing thread as a protective shield to the child.

  • Worship Lord Jimutvahan (जीमूतवाहन) and Surya Narayan.

  • Perform aarti to God with incense, lamp etc. and after that offer bhog.

  • Make idols of eagle and sirin from clay and cow dung.

  • Apply red vermilion tilak on their forehead.

  • Read or listen to the story of Jivitputrika Vrat Katha.

  • Do Nirjala vrat for the whole day.

  • Offer 16 pedas, 16 doob garlands, 16 standing rice, 16 knots of thread, 16 cloves, 16 cardamom, 16 paan, 16 vertical betel nut and makeup items to the mother.

  • For the growth and progress of the lineage, fast and worship with bamboo leaves.

  • Eat food only after breaking Jitiya vrat.

  • In this vrat, mothers start the fast by taking food and water on Saptami.

  • On the day of Parana, eat something only after offering Arghya to the Sun.

  • Jhor Bhaat (झोर भात), Noni ka Saag (नोनी का साग) and Madua Roti are eaten on the day of Jitiya Vrat.

  • The vrat is concluded on Navami Tithi.

  • After Paran give food and donation-dakshina to Brahmin.

जितिया व्रत कथा

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, एक बार एक गरुड़ और एक मादा लोमड़ी नर्मदा नदी के पास एक हिमालय के जंगल में रहते थे। दोनों ने कुछ महिलाओं को पूजा करते और उपवास करते देखा और खुद भी इसे देखने की कामना की।

उनके उपवास के दौरान, लोमड़ी भूख के कारण बेहोश हो गई और चुपके से भोजन कर लिया। दूसरी ओर, चील ने पूरे समर्पण के साथ व्रत का पालन किया और उसे पूरा किया। परिणामस्वरूप लोमड़ी से पैदा हुए सभी बच्चे जन्म के कुछ दिन बाद ही खत्म हो गए और चील की संतान लंबी आयु के लिए धन्य हो गई।

इस कथा के अनुसार जीमूतवाहन गंधर्व के बुद्धिमान और राजा थे। जीमूतवाहन शासक बनने से संतुष्ट नहीं थे और परिणामस्वरूप उन्होंने अपने भाइयों को अपने राज्य की सभी जिम्मेदारियां दीं और अपने पिता की सेवा के लिए जंगल में चले गए। एक दिन जंगल में भटकते हुए उन्‍हें एक बुढ़िया विलाप करती हुई मिलती है।

उन्‍होंने बुढ़िया से रोने का कारण पूछा। इसपर उसने उसे बताया कि वह सांप (नागवंशी) के परिवार से है और उसका एक ही बेटा है। एक शपथ के रूप में हर दिन एक सांप पक्षीराज गरुड़ को चढ़ाया जाता है और उस दिन उसके बेटे का नंबर था।

उसकी समस्या सुनने के बाद ज‍िमूतवाहन ने उन्‍हें आश्‍वासन द‍िया क‍ि वह उनके बेटे को जीव‍ित वापस लेकर आएंगे। तब वह खुद गरुड़ का चारा बनने का व‍िचार कर चट्टान पर लेट जाते हैं। तब गरुड़ आता है और अपनी अंगुलियों से लाल कपड़े से ढंके हुए जिमूतवाहन को पकड़कर चट्टान पर चढ़ जाता है।

उसे हैरानी होती है क‍ि ज‍िसे उसने पकड़ा है वह कोई प्रति‍क्रिया क्‍यों नहीं दे रहा है। तब वह ज‍िमूतवाहन से उनके बारे में पूछता है। तब गरुड़ ज‍िमूतवाहन की वीरता और परोपकार से प्रसन्न होकर सांपों से कोई और बलिदान नहीं लेने का वादा करता है। मान्‍यता है क‍ि तभी से ही संतान की लंबी उम्र और कल्‍याण के ल‍िए ज‍ित‍िया व्रत मनाया जाता है।

जितिया व्रत पूजन विधि

जितिया व्रत के पहले दिन उपासक महिलाएं स्नान करने के बाद पूजा करती हैं और फिर प्रसाद के रुप में भोजन ग्रहण करती है.

दूसरे अर्थात अष्टमी के दिन सुबह स्नान के बाद माताएं पूजा-पाठ करती हैं और फिर पुरे दिन निर्जला व्रत रखती है. अष्टमी को प्रदोष काल में माताएं जीमूतवाहन की पूजा करती हैं. जीमूतवाहन की कुशा से निर्मित प्रतिमा को धुप,दीप, अक्षत, नैवेद्य पुष्प, रोली, फल आदि अर्पित करके दोबार पूजन किया जाता है.

जिसके बाद मिट्टी और गाय के गोबर से सियारिन और चील ( चुल्लो-सियारिन ) की प्रतिमा बनाई जाती है. प्रतिमा बन जाने के बाद उसके मांग में पीला या लाल सिंदूर का टीका लगाया जाता है. पूजा समाप्त होने के बाद जीवित्पुत्रिका व्रत की कथा सुना जाना जाता है या कथा स्वयं ही पढ़नी चाहिए.

व्रत के तीसरे दिन महिलाएं स्नान, पूजा तथा सूर्य को अर्घ्य देने के बाद पारण करती हैं. इस दिन पारण में मुख्य रूप से मटर का झोर, चावल, पोई का साग, मरुआ की रोटी और नोनी का साग खाया जाता है.

Significance of Jitiya Vrat Katha

The fast is called Jitiya, Jiutiya, Jivitputrika or Jimutavahana vrat. These fasts are taken for long life for children by mothers.

On the first day of the festival, mothers take bath and eat food before sunset, on the second day Nirjala vrat is observed, the meaning of Nirjala vrat is the water is avoided to drink, and on the third day, the fast is broken.

The origin of the festival is still unknown because the festival's beginning legends are said to be different by different people.

Here are some of the original legends about how the festival started:

  • In Mahabharata, Ashwathama kills the child of Abhimanyu in the womb of his wife. Then lord Krishna saved the child and gave the child the name of jivitputrika. Since then all the mothers prayed for their child's safety and long life.

  • Another legend says that there were two sisters named Chulia and Siriya. Siriya was always jealous of Chulia and her children. So one day she killed her children in the jungle not knowing that Siyria was waiting for the children to get home.

But they were not coming home so she started crying and hearing her cry lord Shiva came and asked her why she was crying and she told him everything and asked the Lord for her children's safety.

After knowing what happens to the children lord Shiva gave them life again and since the day is celebrated as Jitiya.

Benefits of Jitiya Vrat Katha

The benefit of the Jitiya festival and Jitiya Vrat Katha is to the child.  On these three days, if a woman keeps fast with sincerity and devotion in her heart she will be blessed with a child and long healthy life for the child.

If the woman who performs the fast already has a child then the fast is believed to protect the child and bestow a lengthy life.
