Significance

Ahoi Mata is the Goddess of children and protector of all offspring. This arti chanted by the mothers throughout the Hindu religions shows Her devotion to their children.

On the day of Ashtami, after taking their morning baths, mothers take a Sankalp ( vow) to keep a fast for the well-being of their children and pray with utmost devotion to Ahoi Mata.

There are various tales of the origins of this tradition, but one, in particular, stands out. It is told every year after the completion of all the rites to remind the devotees of the power of Ahoi Mata - that true devotion can help them fulfill their wishes.

Benefits

Chanting this hymn gives the devotees the Goddess' blessings. It blesses a clear heart and shows the significance of true love and devotion of a mother towards her children.

The story is about a moneylender and his wife. His wife decided to rebuild their house and went to the forest to get some soil. While digging, she accidentally killed a lion cub with her spade.

The lion cursed her that she would face the same fate of losing her children. Within a year, she lost all her seven sons. Blinded by grief, the moneylender and his wife went on a final pilgrimage.

They kept on walking and walking until they fell. Taking pity on them, God told them to go back and devotedly pray to Ahoi Mata.

When they came back, the wife kept fast and drew the face of a lion cub and prayed to Ahoi Mata with this arti. She truly felt guilty and repented for her mistake.

The Goddess blessed her with the boon of fertility to start a new life. This tale shows the mercy and love that Arohi Mata gives to her true devotees
